General Note

The Select Committee was appointed "to consider the present accommodation afforded by the National Gallery, and the best mode of preserving and exhibiting to the public, the works of art given to the nation or purchased by Parliamentary grants, to whom were referred the Report of the Select Committee on Arts and Manufactures of 1836, the Minutes of evidence taken before the Select Committee on Works of Art in 1847-8, together with the Report of the Commission appointed to inquire into the state of the pictures in the National Gallery" (p.iii).
"Ordered, by The House of Commons, to be printed, 25 July 1850" (t.p.).

Appendix includes a copy of the "Report of the Commission appointed to inquire into the state of the pictures in the National Gallery, 24 May 1850", and the "Minutes of evidence taken before the Select Committee (1847-48) appointed to consider the best mode of providing additional room for works of art given to the public, or purchased by means of parliamentary grants".
