$a The publication-date of Volume I is given as 1753 by the title page and plates 4, 6, 22; some plates carry the date 1752 (pl. 16, 31, 37, 45, 48, 50), and the frontispiece carries the date of 1750. The publication-date of Volume II is given as 1757 by the title page; but some plates carry the dates of 1752, 1754, 1755, 1756, and the frontispiece carries the date of 1750.
The work describes the rich collection of paintings brought together by Augustus III. By the time of his father, Augustus 'the Strong', Electors of Saxony had bought pictures by Cranach, Dürer, Tintoretto, Titian, Rubens and others; to which Augustus III added works by Correggio, Titian, Veronese, Velázquez, Rubens and Holbein, and in 1754 Raphael's Sistine Madonna. The gallery made to house the collection (shown here in the two unnumbered plates) struck Goethe with a feeling 'akin to the sensation one has on entering a church', and its educational value was stressed by Winckelmann ('In the interest of promoting good taste the greatest treasures ... have been place here for all the world to view') and by Heinecken (who declares in the text that the gallery made it possible 'to learn under one roof ... things that otherwise must be sought in a great many books'). Throughout its history the Gallery was viewed as a most important partner of the Dresden Academy.

In-text illustrations consist of two title-page vignettes, two headpiece and decorated initials.
