Recueil De Trentes Sujets, Paysages, Ruines, Animaux, Pastorales Et Divers Sujets Champêtres, Composés Et Dessinés Par Nic. Berghem, Peintre Hollandais, Né En 1624, Mort En 1683. Cet habile Peintre travailla successivement sous Vangoyen, Meyaer, Grebber et Woenninx, qu'il surpassa. La richesse de la composition, le charme du coloris, les effets piquants de lumière, l'esprit avec lequel il peignait les Animaux, sont les qualités qu'on remarque dans ses Ouvrages. L'on a ajouté, à cette intéreollection, dix Planches gravées par Wischer; cinq d'après Laer, et les cinq autres d'après Wouvermans.

The title-page calls for 40 pl. (30 after Berchem, 5 after Wouwerman, 5 after Laer); the fifth pl. after Laer is here bound in as the frontispiece. A few plates are numbered; others fall into groups. Eight of the numbered pl. after Berchem are printed two-to-a-sheet; and the last pl. after Berchem is double. The numbered and unnumbered plates form the following sequence: [frontis.], 4, 4, [4], [2], [5], [1], [1], 4 (on 2 sheets), 4 (on 2 sheets), [1] (double); [4], [1], [2], [1], [1].

The first four plates following the title-page are numbered 1-4 - the first carrying the caption in the plate, 'Diversa Animalia Quadrupedia', signed as designed by Berghem, and engraved by J. Vischer, the rest unsigned.

Summary Note

No publication-date is given on the title page; but 'Jean, Marchand D'Estampes' was partner of L.J. Mondhare, and operated alone from Mondhare's address at rue Saint-Jean-de-Beauvais when Mondhare ceased to be active, ca. 1792.
