Responsibility Note

The name of the source artist is given with most of the engravings. Paolo Fidanza's signature as draughtsman and engraver appears on twenty-one plates of Volume I, and thirteen plates of Volume II.

Summary Note

Raphael is the only artist whose work is reproduced in Volume I, and he is the chief artist represented in Volume II; but the latter volume also shows work by Giulio Romano, Titian, Guido Reni, Fiamengo, the school of Carracci, Barocci, S. Gaetani, Mantegna, G. Cagnacci, Guercino, Poussin, Sebastiano del Piombo and Ag. Massucci.

All the paintings shown in Volume I are from the Vatican collection; those in Volume II are from the Vatican, S. Pietro in Montorio and the collections of the Valenti, Barberini, Orgiati, Doria Pamphili, Rospigliosi, Corsini, Marcolini, Albani, Bianconi, Spada and Orsini families.

Ordered to be purchased on 10 October 1788 (see RA Council Minutes II, 63). Purchased from Francesco Sastres for £6 6s. on 3 November 1788 (see Sastres' bill for 'Books ordered by Mr. Wilton for the use of the Royal Academy' dated 3 November 1788).

Binding Note

Originally bound by John Miller in half russia for 18s. (see his bill dated 10 November 1788); rebacked and recornered in late 20th century calf, retaining original black morocco spine-label lettered 'Recueil Des Personnage Illustres' (this binder's title matches the abbreviated title on Miller's bill).
