This work was originally published in 1588.
It describes Vasari's designs for the decoration of the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, which he carried out for Cosimo Medici between 1555 and 1572. The scheme includes representations of the genealogy of the pagan gods, the story of the Medici family, especially as commissioners of works of art, and the history of Florence.
The programme provided a model of self-publicity for other rich and powerful persons.
