In the volume of plates, most plates name the source-artist - Raphael, or his father, Giovanni Santi (pl. 2,3). All - apart from pl. 13, which is unsigned - are signed with the names of draughtsmen, Ramboux (pl.2), J.D. Passavant (pl. 4, 7, 9, 12), F. Calendi (pl. 5, 6), Temmel (pl. 8), Franz Schubert (pl. 10) or L. Gruner (pl. 11), and by the engravers, Witthöft (pl. 1), L. Gruner (pl. 2, 5-11) or Ant. Krüger (pl. 3) or lithographer, L. Zoellner (pl. 4, 12).

The work is dedicated to the Administration of the Städel'sches Kunstinstitut Zu Frankfurt A.M.

This biography and catalogue drew on a wealth of documentation throughout Europe, and have been described as forming 'a landmark in Raphael studies'. Sir Charles Eastlake R.A. reviewed the work (reprinted in his Contributions to the literature of the fine arts (1848), p.180-271).

A revision was published in 1858; an abridged English translation, in 1872.

As part of his research for this book Passavant visited Britain, and his account of the collections which he examined was published in his Kunstreise durch England und Belgien (1833) (English translation, Tour of a German artist in England, 1836, repr. 1978).
