This biography and catalogue drew on a wealth of documentation throughout Europe, and have been described as forming 'a landmark in Raphael studies'. Sir Charles Eastlake R.A. reviewed the work (reprinted in his Contributions to the literature of the fine arts (1848), p.180-271). The plates are captioned, and show: 1. As part of his research for this book Passavant visited Britain, and his account of the collections which he examined was published in his Kunstreise durch England und Belgien (1833) (English translation, Tour of a German artist in England, 1836, repr. 1978). |
