Summary Note

A publication date of 1837 is carried on plate 9 (other plates are undated). This biography and catalogue drew on a wealth of documentation throughout Europe, and have been described as forming 'a landmark in Raphael studies'. Sir Charles Eastlake R.A. reviewed the work (reprinted in his Contributions to the literature of the fine arts (1848), p.180-271). The plates are captioned, and show: 1. Contrada Del Monte In Urbino; 2. Altarblatt Der Familie Buffi; 3. Rafael im Alter von drei Jahren; 4. Rafael Santi nach einer Zeichnung von sich selbst, im. Besitz des Herrn. Jeremias Harmann in London; 5. Rafael Santi; 6. Rafaels Geliebte; 7. Giuliano De' Medici; 8. Crucifix In Der Gallerie Des Cardinals Fesch; 9. Der Vision Eines Ritters; 10. Christus Auf Dem Oelberg; 11. Altarblatt Der Familie Ansidei, In Blenheim; 12. Facsimile Eines Sonetto Von Rafael in der Sammlung des Britischen Museum; 13. Façade des Palastes Rafaels nach seinem Plane von Bramante erbaut; Grundriss der Peterskirche nach Rafaels Plan. A revision was published in 1858; an abridged English translation, in 1872. As part of his research for this book Passavant visited Britain, and his account of the collections which he examined was published in his Kunstreise durch England und Belgien (1833) (English translation, Tour of a German artist in England, 1836, repr. 1978).
