General Note

This is a photocopy of the original in the Sir John Soane's Museum Library (ref. no. 3366). The printer's statement is from the foot of p. [3]. This is a 'Companion Picture' to the "Canterbury Pilgrimage" and was to be disposed of by lottery in a similar manner to that painting (see 23/607) by its owner W.B. Tiffin, Printseller, No. 434, Strand West, near Lowther Arcade. The 'subscribers' to the lottery (limited to 100 persons) paid 3 guineas each. The painting had never been engraved so the winner of the lottery acquired the copyright with the painting. The lottery for the painting was to be held on 24 Febraury 1834 at the owner's premises.
