General Note

This work was intended to be issued in two parts with a total of 40 plates, but Wilkins was seriously ill in 1838 and died before he was able to complete part II and this part was never published. The printer statement is on the verso of the title-page, 'Printed by A. J. Valpy, Red Lion Court, Fleet Street.'

Provenance

The front loose endpaper is inscribed in ink, 'For the use of the Library of the Royal Academy from the Author'.

Presented to the RA by William Wilkins RA in 1837. See: RA Council Minutes, VIII, 361.: 'Read two letters from Mr. Wilkins RA presenting to the Academy the first part of a work on architecture and some architectural models, and recommending the Academy to procure others for the use of the students.'

Binding Note

The book has a printed cover label describing the work as 'Part I'. There is a handwritten spine label in ink, 'Prolusiones Architectonicæ / W. Wilkins. R.A.'
