General Note

The volume contains proofs of the plates specially bound for presentation to the Royal Academy. A handwritten note on the bottom right of the inscribed presentation page at the front of this volume states: Proofs upon French paper / 1st Edition and also of the / retouched plates after 1100 for the / 2nd Edition [signed] John P. Gandy.

The volume contains two states of all the plates and vignettes from the first series of Pompeiana.

Although apparently intended for the Royal Academy it did not enter its collection until 1995.

Binding Note

The verso of the front endpaper has the label of the binders Dawson & Lewis, 5 Richmonds Buildings, Dean Street, Soho. The fine gold-tooled green leather binding is lettered on the spine, 'Pompeii' and 'Proofs.'
