Summary Note
The plates show:
1. (t.pl.) a fountain, with figures of the three Graces, framed by fountains and trellis-work (the only symmetrical composition in this series);
2. a curved wall with fountains (left), a fountain with putti supporting a globe (right);
3. a fountain (left), pears heaped in a dish (centre), a buffet (right);
4. a salamander perched before an incense-burner (left), fountain and trellis (right);
5. a fountain, with vase and steps (left), a heap of pears &c. (right);
6. a vase upon a socle, with fruit and a small fountain;
7. a mermaid with trident before a trellis (left), smoking vessels, with garden steps (right);
8. vases on a socle, with trellis;
9. fountains and scroll-work (left), leafage and scrollwork (right).
All the plates are in a rococo, asymmetric style - accentuated by the vertical central division of several of the plates.
This book was followed by a Second Livre De Tableaux Et Rocailles par J. De La Joue Peintre du Roy (n.d.), which contains a further nine plates, numbered 10-18.
