Summary Note

The manuscript of this work was discovered in the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice by Jacopo Morelli; but the identity of its author, Marcantonio Michiel, was not established until 1835 by D. Francesconi. Michiel's notes, compiled between 1521 and 1543, describe the contents of churches, civic buildings and private collections in the Veneto, and form a record of the taste and opinions of his friends and contemporaries - artists, collectors and connoisseurs.

A critical edition of the text, by T. Frimmel, was published in 1896. An English translation by P. Mussi, edited by G.C. Williamson, was published in 1903 (The Anonimo: notes on pictures and works of art in Italy).

Reproductions

T. Frimmel's edition (1896) was republished in 2000 (Firenze: Edifir).

The title-page is inscribed in ink, 'R.N. Wornum'.
