Summary Note

The frontispiece shows a bust of Raphael, on a pedestal. The pedestal is inscribed, 'Ille Hic Est Raphael Timuit Quo Sospite Vinci Rerum Magna Parens Et Moriente Mori Non Pulvis Non Umbra Sumus Me Vivere Chapron Hic Dedit: Urbinas Ille Ego Sum Raphael'; and the foot of the plate carries the caption, 'Ad Eximium Pictorem Nicolaum Chapron Picturam Raphael mutis revocavit ab umbris tu Chaprone iterum reddis utrique diem.'

The numbered etchings show Raphael's paintings in the Vatican loggie - plates 1-48 depicting events described in the Hebrew Bible; plates 49-52, events from the Gospels. Each is captioned with a quotation from the Bible, in Latin translation.
