520 2 # $a Volume I carries the publication-date of 1835; Volumes II-IV, that of 1845.

Champollion made his record in Egypt in 1828-9 (when the French expedition was accompanied by a Tuscan expedition led by I. Rosellini). Although he is best known as a linguist and the principal contributor to the decipherment of the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, most of the plates in these four volumes show not inscriptions but wall-paintings and intaglio sculptures. These show gods and goddesses, Pharaohs and military campaigns, and the daily life of ancient Egyptians at work and leisure.

The following plates are printed in color: Vol. I. frontis., pl. 3, 11-17bis, 26-29, 34-36, 45, 54, 59, 73, 78, 91ter, 92, 93; Vol. II. pl. 144, 164, 168, 174; Vol. III. pl. 258, 260-4, 266; Vol. IV. pl. 350-4, 361-363 bis, 393 bis, 426, 428 ter, 428 quater, 429.
562 # # $a Imperfect; lacks pl. 32 bis in Volume I; plates 155 bis and 179(?) in Vol. II.; pl. 248 and 296 (?) in Vol. III.

In Volume II a letter from the publisher, Firmin Didot Frères, Fils Et Cie., to the London bookseller, Dulau, dated 8 janvier 1873, has been inserted.
