Summary Note

Some copies have bound in the paper cover of this cuaderno, of which the title reads, 'Monumentos Arquitectónicos De España. Publicados de Rl. Orden y por disposicion del Ministerio de Fomento. Cuaderno No.'

The titles are in Spanish; the text is in Spanish and French in parallel.

The work describes the church of San Salvador de Valdedios, commissioned by Alfonso III, King of Asturias (r. 866-910), and that of San Salvador de Priesca, consecrated in 921. The basilica-shaped church of San Salvador has a high nave with continuous barrel vaulting and square piers, a tripartite chevet and galleried porch. The frames and horseshoe arches designed for its window-openings may have been suggested by Arab examples.

The plates are captioned, and show: [1] Iglesia De San Salvador De Valdedios (Concejo De Villaviciosa); [2] Seccion Transversal Y Ventanas De La Iglesia De San Salvador De Valdedios (Concejo De Villaviciosa); [3] Plantas, Textero, Secciones Y Detalles De Las Iglesia Parroquiales De Priesca Y De Fuentes (Concejo De Villaviciosa). In-text illustrations consist of a title-page vignette, headpiece (showing a tripartite window with horseshoe arches) and decorated initial.

The decorated initial on p.1 is printed in color.
