The text describes the mosaic of Galatea discovered at Elche in 1861, and other mosaics discovered in 1862.

The plates show details of the mosaic of Galatea. In-text illustrations consist of a title-page vignette and a plan of the mosaics discovered in 1862.

The plates are printed in color.
