$a Some copies have bound in the paper cover of this cuaderno, of which the title reads, 'Monumentos Arquitectónicos De España. Publicados de Rl. Orden y por disposicion del Ministerio de Fomento. Cuaderno No.' The titles are in Spanish; the text is in Spanish and French in parallel. The work describes the Ibn Shoshan synagogue in Toledo, which ca. 1550 became the church of S. Maria La Blanca. The synagogue was founded in 1180, after the expulsion of Arab rulers from the city (1085), but built in Arabesque (Mudéjar) style. It has five aisles, horseshoe arches on octagonal columns, knot-work stucco frieze and a wooden ceiling. In Spain the Mudejar style continued to be used into the sixteenth century. In the nineteenth century there was a revival of the style, generally called 'Mudejar Revival' in Spain and its empire and 'Moorish Revival' elsewhere. The plates are captioned and show: [1] 'Parte De La Seccion Longitudinal De La Antigua Sinagoga ...'; [2] 'Secciones Y Detalles De La Antigua Sinagoga ...'. In-text illustrations consist of a title-page vignette, head-piece ('Fachada Del Testero De La Sinagoga'), decorated initial and tail-piece ('el brocal y su inscripcion').
