Responsibility Note

The name of the compiler is not given on the title-pages, but the dedications of Vols. I and II (1784, 1785) are signed by Giuseppe Antonio Guattani, and that of the 1805 volume is signed by Pietro Paolo Montagnani-Mirabili.

The frontispiece used in all seven volumes is signed as drawn by C. Labruzzi and engraved by Mochetti. The portrait in Vol. I. is signed as engraved by Franciscs. Piranesi; that in Vol. II as after a medal by Leberecht and engraved by Piranesi; the figure of 'Roma' in Vol. III as made by Rastaini. Many numbered plates in all volumes are unsigned, but two pl. in Vol. IV are signed as drawn by P. Savorelli, and several in vol. VII are signed by draughtsmen (Luigi Agricola, Filip. Salari, Piet. Holl, Micinelli); and several others are signed by engravers (Aless. Mochetti (or Muchetti), Perini, Piroli, Franc. Rastaini; Benede. Mori, Benedetti, Gio. Bruni, P. Ruga, Piranesi, L. Cunego, P. Savorelli, Gin Carattoni, Bossi, Gio. Brunetti, F. Barbazza, Silvestrini, Gio. Pietrini).

Vols. I, II are dedicated by Giuseppe Antonio Guattani to Pope Pius VI and Peter Duke of Courland respectively. Vol VII is dedicated by Pietro Paolo Montagnani-Mirabili to Luigi Marconi.

Summary Note

The publication-dates of the title-pages of the first six volumes are those of 1784-1789; that of the seventh volume is 1805. Most plates in the first six volumes carry the date, of the year and the month (but pl. 3 of Novembre 1784 is misdescribed as 'Novembre 1785'). In the 1805 volume the 'Indice Delle Cose' describes the volume as 'Tomo VIII', which may be a misprint for 'Tomo VII' or may be taken as implying that there was another volume, Tomo VII, issued between 1789 and 1805. For the 1805 volume the imprint is changed from 'Nella Stamperia Pagliarini' to 'Presso Pietro Paolo Montagnani-Mirabili All'Insegna Di Pallade A Pasquino.'

The work describes excavations carried out in or near Rome year by year and month by month from 1784 to 1789 and in 1805. The frontispiece used in all seven volumes shows an excavation near Rome. The portrait in Vol.I shows Pope Pius VI; that in Vol. II 'Petrus ... Curlandiae ... Dux'; in Vol. III 'Roma'. The plates show plans, building complexes, statues, temples, bas-reliefs, mosaics, gems, altars, busts, inscriptions.

A microfiche version of vols. I-VI (1784-9) was made by the Leopoldo Cicognara Program of the University of Illinois Library (Urbana, 1988).
