General Note
This work discusses the frescoes of Diane and Acteon painted in 1523–24 by Parmigianino in the Rocca di Fontanellato (or Rocca Sanvitale), a moated fortress residence in Fontanellato near Parma. The work is in three parts, each preceded by a lithograph produced by Luigi Vigotti: the first part on the building; the second part on the artist, Francesco Mazzola, called Parmigianino; and the third part on the frescoes. The author is unclear; the text is signed n. n.
The text is marked throughout with underlinings and marginalia in red ink and the additions (at the end) in black ink.
Provenance
The two endpapers preceding the half-title are inscribed in ink on one - 'Exemplare con emendamenti e Giunte a penna' [copy with amendments and additions] - and on the second endpaper an inscription, 'Parma. 12. Jiunio, 1858. / Al dotto e gentile Signore / Giovanni Adorni / questa operetta offerise / in segno / di cordiale sentimento/ e di particolare stima / Luigi Sanvitale [PArma. 12 June 1858. To the learned and gracious Signore Giovanni Adorni this little work is offered as a sign of cordial sentiment and particular esteem / Luigi Sanvitale].
