Summary Note

No publication-date is given on the title-page. The Preface carries the date of May 1, 1851.

This biography was intended to enlarge upon George Jones's Sir Francis Chantrey, R.A. Recollections ... (1849). In the early nineteenth century Chantrey was one of the leading sculptors in Britain, particularly admired for his portrait busts. He is also remembered for bequeathing about £100,000 to the Royal Academy for the purchase of British works of art for a national collection - works now housed in the Tate Britain gallery, London.

The title-page vignette is captioned. 'Cottage in which Chantrey was Born.'
