Granville Sharpe was a British classicist and biblical scholar, devout Christian, philanthropist and one of the first campaigners for the abolition of the slave trade in Britain. He and four of his siblings were keen musicians and they and their family members often gave public concerts at William Sharpe's City home and on the family's sailing barge, Apollo, on the Thames from Fulham (a painting of the family playing on the barge was painted by Johann Zoffany, RA).

The frontispiece is an engraved portrait by George Dance, RA, engraver Henry Meyer ('Published for the Proprietor May 1820'). The work was dedicated to His Royal Highness William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester. The printer statement is found at the foot of the last page (xxxiii), 'Ellerton and Henderson, Printers, / Johnson's Court, Fleet Street, London.'
