Summary Note

The first plates for this series of prints appear to have been etched by Goya by 1810 (and two plates carry the date 1810 alongside his signature), but only working proofs were pulled for him during his lifetime. The Academia de San Fernando acquired eighty of the eighty-two plates in 1862, cleaned them, renumbered them (Goya's original numbers for several plates are visible bottom left), added the captions, and published them in 1863.

The disasters shown are based on Goya's observations of the conflict between the Spanish people and Napoleon's army at Zaragoza in 1808, and reports of other atrocities of the Peninsular War.

The prints have been admired not only for the intensity with which their subject is communicated, but also for their handling of the etching and other mixed media (burnished aquatint, drypoint, lavis and engraving).
