Summary Note

The first edition of this work appeared in 1758. This second edition is in part a response to criticisms of the first edition made by Stuart and Revett in their Antiquities of Athens, published in 1762.

Plate 1 in Volume I, accompanying the 'Essai sur l'histoire', shows plans and some elevations of pre-Christian and Christian places of worship. Plates 2-15, accompanying Part 1, show mainly views of Athens and Attica (Thoricion, Parthenon, Erechtheum, Propylaea, theatre, Theseum (i.e. Hephaesteum), odeum, lantern of Demosthenes (i.e. choragic monument of Lysicrates), Sunium, Phaleron, Piraeus), but pl. 3 is a plan of the Acropolis, 12 is a map of Piraeus and 15 shows plans, elevations and details of a Doric or Tuscan temple. Plates 16-35, accompanying Part 2, show plans, elevations and details of the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders, but pl. 26 is a view of a reconstruction of the Propylaea of the Athenian acropolis. In Volume II plates 1-15, accompanying Part 1, consist of a map and ten views of Athens (pl. 1-10) and a view of Corinth (pl. 11), a map and two views of Sparta (pl. 12-14), and plans of stadia (pl. 15); plates 16-26, accompanying Part 2, show a view of Pola in Istria (pl. 16), plans and details of a Doric structure (pl. 17-19), and plans, elevations, sections and details of Corinthian structures (pl. 20-26).
