The work had first been published in 1865-71, and in this edition many plates carry the date of 1864; one, that of 1865 (pl. 12).

The work describes royal jewels and vessels of France. The objects shown in plates 1-11 are listed as from the 5th to the 13th century; those shown in plates 12 to 60, as of the 15th, 16th and 17th century.
