The portrait-painter and history-painter, John Opie, had been elected Professor of Painting in the Royal Academy in 1805. His four lectures were delivered in February and March 1807. P. Hoare's Note on the Lectures states that they treat 'the first, of Design; the 2d, of Invention; the 3d, of Chiaro Scuro; the 4th, of Colouring'. Many of the views expressed in them owe something to the lectures of Joshua Reynolds, Henry Fuseli and James Barry.
