The work consists of the following lectures: I. On the character of nature in general, and on the mission of art; II. On portraiture, domestic and historical subjects, and on the causes and decline of art; III. On poetical and religious subjects; IV. General advice to students; and the Appendix, On the value of portraits to posterity. The caption-titles of each lecture state the date on which it was delivered: 1866 February 12; 1866 February 26; 1866 February 26; 1866 February 5 (perhaps the last date is a misprint, as the lecture opens with a reference to 'my previous Lectures'.
