Responsibility Note

In Volume I the folding plates A and B are signed as 'Drawn by a pupil under direction' and etched by W. Bromley. In-text illustrations are unsigned. In Volume II the frontispiece portrait of Haydon is signed as 'From a Bust by Park' and 'C.B. Leighton, Litho. 6, Percy St., Rathbone Pl.' The first, folding, plate is unsigned but captioned 'From the Original Drawing given me by Wilkie'; the second plate (portrait of Wilkie) is signed as 'Sketched by B.R. Haydon. C.B. Leighton, Litho.'

The printer of Volume I is named on the title-page verso, 'London: Printed By Manning And Mason, Ivy-Lane, St. Paul's'; that of Volume II, on the half-title verso, 'London: Printed By Wilson And Ogilvy, 57, Skinner Street, Snowhill'.

The volumes are dedicated by the author to William Wordsworth (Volume I) and the Duke of Sutherland (Volume II).

From 1835 Haydon delivered a series of lectures in London (Mechanics' Institute), Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Leicester.

In Volume I the folding plates A and B are captioned and show skeletons, of a 'Man in his natural position; standing on his feet, - (heel and toe)' and of a 'Quadruped placed on his heel and toes, like a human being'. The in-text illustrations show bones and muscles. In Volume II the frontispiece is a portrait of Haydon; the first, folding, plate shows a foot by Wilkie; the second plate is a portrait of 'David Wilkie arguing with some apprehension he will get the worst of it'.

Volume I has some marginal notes in pencil, in an unknown hand.
