The first chapter forms an introduction; chapters 2-3 describe Phœnician, Persian and Egyptian art; chapters 4-5, that of the Etruscans; chapters 6-12, the art of the ancient Greeks as far as the 5th century B.C.

The plate is captioned and shows 'Jupiter Olympius Of Phidias'. The title-page vignette shows 'Minerva, From The Gem Of Aspasus'.
