Responsibility Note

The title-plate of Part I is signed as designed by Car. Rodulphius and engraved by Jacob. Picinus; that of Part II, as engraved by Jacob. Picinus. Most illustrations are signed as engraved by Giac. Piccini (Jacob. Picinus, I. Picinus, I.P.), but one is signed as engraved by G. Georgi and the portrait of Varotari is signed as engraved by Darius Var. Nepos. Only the first portrait (of Ridolfi) is signed by a draughtsman - 'M. Antonii Romili I.C.'

This collection of biographies by Ridolfi includes a reprint of his biography of Tintoretto (first published in 1642) and his autobiography.

Provenance

This work does not appear in the 1802 printed catalogue of the RA Library but was one of the five books that the Keeper, Henry Fuseli asked Council's permission to borrow 'during the Exhibition' in 1814 (see RA Council Minutes V, 15 April 1814).

Copy Note

In Part I the margin of p.306 is inscribed in ink, 'I have a drawing of ... of the ... probably ...'.

In Part II four of the unnumbered preliminary pages (carrying poems, 'Cortese Lettore' and 'Errori non annotati') have been bound in between p. 322 and 323.

Binding Note

18th-century calf; rebacked in 1997 by Aquarius, gilt-decorated spine, red morocco spine-label lettered 'Ridolfi Vite De Pittori'.
