Summary Note
No publication-date is given on the title-page, but the dedication carries the date of '15. Genaro 1674.' (Lupis's letter carries the date of 1673; the approbation and privilege, that of 1672; Mauri's letter, that of 1670. The work is known to have been presented in some form to the Accademia di S. Luca in Rome in 1666.)
The work describes a tour by 'Girupeno' (i.e.a Perugino) under the guidance of Raphael, through Rome, Bologna, Naples, Venice, Milan, Genoa, Turin, Parma and Modena. Under this fiction the author comments on the works of art and artists of these regions and presents his own theories. He concludes with advice to artists beginning their careers and with quotation from Leonardo's notes on painting (published in 1651). The latter publication provides the basis for Scaramuccia's 'Catalogo Degl'Autori c'hanno scritto di Pittura'.
There are no illustrations. The publication is decorated with a wood-cut title-page vignette (printer-publisher's device), and some woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials.
Provenance
The front pastedown carries an armorial book-plate lettered 'CT' and 'Bibliotheca Palatina'. The title-page is inscribed in ink, 'R.N. Wornum'. Purchased for RA Library in 1878 (see RA Annual Report for 1878, p. 50).
