Many of the drawings published here by Woodburn had been bought from Woodburn earlier by Lawrence. After Lawrence's death his collection was offered for sale to the King, the British Museum and others, and was eventually bought by Woodburn. After subsequent sales, many items were acquired by the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and by the British Museum, London.

It was during Lawrence's Presidency that the Royal Academy acquired Michelangelo's sculpture, the Taddei Tondo.
