The plates include three maps - of Livorno, the estuary of the Po and the Pontine marshes. There are three title-page vignettes, which successively show a dragon 'come viveva il primo di Decembre 1691 nelle paludi fuori di Roma', 'come è stato morte' and 'come si ritrova nelle mani dell'ingegniere Cornelio Meyer'.
The Dutch engineer C.J. Mejjer had regulated the flow of the Arno and the Tiber, and in 1685 had published his account of the latter in his L'Arte di restituire a Roma la tralasciata navigazione del suo Tevere. In 1689 and 1696 he also published Nuovi ritrovamenti, concerned with magnets and lodestones - one of which is shown in plate 9 of Part II of the present work. As the titles of the three sections indicate, Mejjer was a man of many parts.
