General Note

The work illustrates the organisation and the uniforms of the various branches of the French military, drawn by Edouard Detaille and with text by Jules Richard. The copy catalogued here is in 16 fortfolios as issued between 1885 and 1889; elsewhere there are copies gathered and bound together in either 2 or 4 voumes.

Each of portfolios 1-15 contain four plates related to the text enclosed. The subjects of the portfolios are as follows: (portfolios 1-4) Senior staff, military colleges, the Infantry - (portfolios 5-8) the Cavalry - (portfolios 9-10) l'Armée d'Afrique - (portfolio 11) the Artillery - (portfolio 12) le Génie [military engineers] - (portfolio 13) the Gendarmerie - (portfolio 14) - Administration - (portfolio 15) the Marines - (portfolio 16) title-pages, frontispieces, tables of contents for binding the work into two volumes [vol. 1 to include portfolios 1-8 and vol. 2 portfolios 9-15] as well as a 'Note complementaire'.

Binding Note

Each portfolio has marbled paper boards with grey cloth spine. On the front board is pasted a red leather label with gold lettering giving the artist and author's names, the title (L'armée française), the portfolio number and the subject of the contents. There is no spine title.
