$a Derand's best-known work is the church of St. Paul - St. Louis in rue Saint Antoine, Paris (1629-1641), where he took over the structure begun by E. Martellange, adding the vaults and the beautiful façade. This treatise on stereotomy was addressed to both apprentices and master-masons, and is an attempt to apply new mathematic logic to the craft of the stone-cutter. But although he criticises Philibert De L'Orme and Jousse, Derand remains closer to them than to the Cartesian geometry of Desargues and Bosse. The illustrations are all geometric figures keyed to the text - but their captions are often framed in fanciful cartouches, those on pages [213] and [449] showing students absorbed in the task of designing or modelling vaults. A second edition was published in 1743, and a third in 1755. |
