Summary Note
This is a new edition of a convenient reference work, which proved very popular and was frequently reprinted in Italy throughout the 18th century. An English version would appear in 1730 (Repertorium sculptile-typicum). Fr. Orlandi's first edition (1704) had drawn on earlier biographic publications such as those of G. Vasari, G. Baglione, C. Ridolfi, L. Vedriani, C. Malvasia, J. von Sandrart and the Raccolta de' pittori, scultori ed achitetti modenesi (1662). For this edition Orlandi consulted Arnold Houbraken and corresponded with Pierre Crozat (to whom the edition is dedicated), G. Ghezzi, F.M.N. Gabburri, F.A. Manni and G. Baruffaldi.
The main part of the work presents Italian and other European artists in alphabetic order of first names (with an index of surnames). The biographic dictionary is followed by bibliographies, notes on technique and facsimiles of engravers' marks (Orlandi was one of the first to provide these).
