Summary Note

The added engraved title-plate reads, 'La Pratique Du Cavalier Ou L'Exersice De Monter A Cheval ... A Paris Chez Guillaume l'Oyson, et Jean Baptiste l'Oyson, au Palais au nom de Iesus, et a la Croix d'Or. Avec privilege du Roy.'

The work had earlier been published in 1612 and 1629.

The frontispiece shows a portrait of René De Menou Chevalier Seigneur De Charnizay. The added engraved title-plate is captioned and shows 'La vraye posture du bel homme de cheval comme il est descript au chapitre 17. de la premiere partie du present livre, page 34.' The other four plates are not captioned and show various aspects of horsemanship.

Provenance

The front pastedown carries a now illegible armorial bookplate over which has been pasted a second bookplate, 'Ex Museo Del Montino'. The verso of the front loose endpaper is inscribed in pencil, 'S.A.H.', i.e. S.A. Hart, librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81.

Binding Note

17th-century calf; gilt-decorated spine, lettered 'Pratiqe Du Cavalie' and 'R.A.' Bound with one other.
