The work appears to have been published serially. (ESTC N7756 describes a copy having a title page, carrying the date of 1798, and [14] pages of letterpress text.)

Most plates are captioned with the name of the original draughtsman, and with that of the drawing's then owner. They reproduce drawings by Raphael, Parmegiano, Vasari, Parmegianino, Palma Jovine, Rubens, Michelangelo, Cignani, Perin Del Vaga (after Raphael), Rembrandt, Raffael Da Reggio, Battista Franco, Polidoro, Barocci, Giulio Romano, An. Carracci, Lud. Cangiagio, Lod. Carracci, Titian, B. Garofalo, Durer, Correggio, Primaticcio, Lafage, T. Zucchero, Tintoretto, Guercino, Guido, Domenichino, Leonardo da Vinci, Bernini, Daniele da Volterra, Paolo Farinato, Cellini and Cortona; one is unattributed. They were in the collections of Sir Joshua Reynolds, Benjamin West, 'C.M. Edm.', His Majesty, Richard Dalton, Henry Reveley, Richard Cosway, Sir Abraham Hume, Edward Knight, Richard Payne Knight, Paul Sandby, W. Hodges, R. Udney, 'C.M.' and Charles Grevil.

Provenance

The Academy subscribed in 1789 (RAA cash book 1789), and re-subscribed in 1796.
