Agostino Carracci had worked mainly in his native city of Bologna, but had also carried out commissions for Cardinal Odoardo Farnese at the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, and had afterwards worked for Ranuccio Farnese in Parma, where he died in March 1602. He was buried in Parma cathedral; but in January 1603 the Accademia degli Incamminati arranged a funeral service for him in the church of the Ospedale della Morte in Bologna.

Guido Reni returned from Rome to Bologna for the commemoration; and he and Francesco Brizio etched the plate and illustrations for this record.
