In his Trattato (1584) and Idea del tempio della pittura Lomazzo attempted to create a philosophy of art within a cosmology that owes something to Plato, Thomas Aquinas, Ficino and H.C. Agrippa. In the seven books of the Trattato he is concerned with proportion, gesture, colour, light, perspective and the application of these to composition and subject-matter. In the Idea Del Tempio Della Pittura Lomazzo describes a circular domed temple supported by seven caryatids representing Michelangelo, Gaudenzio Ferrari, Polidoro da Caravaggio, Leonardo, Raphael, Andrea Mantegna and Titian (each connected to one of seven planets). Its walls are built from proportion, motion, colour, light, perspective; the dome and lantern signify composition and 'forma'. Each of the seven painters is associated with excellence in a particular field.
