The work had first been published in German in 1863.

It is a history of sculpture in Europe only. In the first volume Lübke writes on: Introduction; Oriental Sculpture; Greek Sculpture; Ancient Sculpture Of Italy; Sculpture Of The Middle Ages. In the second he writes on: Sculpture Of The Middle Ages (ctd.); Sculpture Of Modern Times.

Provenance

In Volume I the verso of the front loose endpaper is inscribed in pencil 'S:A:H:', i.e. S.A. Hart, librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81.
