Summary Note

Best known as a playwright, Planché was also an enthusiastic scholar of heraldry and costume. He had been elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1829 and in 1843 had helped found the British Archaeological Association, and would be invited to reorganise the collections of armour at the Soth Kensington Museum and in the Tower of London.
