$a The plates were issued in parts between 1825 and 1828. The accompanying letterpress was given away free to subscribers, probably with the final part. Thus some copies exclude some or all of the letterpress, and take their title from the etched title-plate issued in February 1827, which reads: Pugin and Le Keux's Specimens of the Architectural Antiquities of Normandy. In this volume the etched title-plate, list of plates and etched plates are bound before the accompanying letterpress. The plates, including the title-plate, are assigned the numbers 1-80 in the letterpress list (p. [1]-4 at the beginning). However, there are six double-page plates, each assigned two numbers. The final four plates consist of two coppers, each printed twice, the second copy with hand-colouring. The printer statement is on the verso of the title-page, 'London: Printed by J. Moyes, Took's Court, Chancery Lane.' The plates are signed as printed by McQueen, Hayward and Barnett. The letterpress includes a dedication to Jeffry Wyatville, Esq., R.A., F.S.A.; The Editor's Preface (p. v-viii); Introduction: embracing a brief review of the characteristics of Christian Architecture in Normandy (p. i-xx), followed by the principal essay (p. 1-40). |
