The 36 volumes by Buffon fall into four groups: 1. 'Histoire Naturelle, Générale Et Particulière', 15 vols. (1749-1768), numbered on title-pages as 1-15; 2. 'Histoire Naturelle Des Oiseaux', 9 vols. (1770-1780), numbered on title-pages 1-9 but on half-titles as tomes 16-24 of the 'Histoire Naturelle, Générale Et Particulière'; 3. 'Histoire Naturelle des Minéraux', 5 vols. (1783-1788), numbered on title-pages as 1-5 ; 4. 'Histoire Naturelle, Générale Et Particulière, Servant de suite à la Théorie de la Terre, & d'introduction à l'histoire des Minéraux. Par M. le Comte de Buffon .... Supplément', 7 vols. (1774-1789, i.e. contemporaneously with the two series on birds and minerals), numbered on title-pages and half-titles as 1-7. In the first, fifteen-volume group this is Buffon in Volumes I, 2, and Buffon and Daubenton in Volumes 3-15. In the second, nine-volume group on birds it is Buffon in Volumes 1, 2, 7 (16, 17, 22) and Buffon and Montbeillard in Volumes 3-6 (18-21). For Volumes I-15 there is a general index in Volume 15. For subsequent volumes there is no general index, but most have each a separate index. |
