Summary Note

The text describes coronation ceremonies in France.

The plates show about eighty French costumes from the 13th to the 18th century. The book also carries head-pieces, tail-pieces and decorated initials.

Provenance

The front pastedown carries the armorial bookplate of Theod. H. Broadhead. A preliminary leaf is inscribed in ink, 'To Theod: H. Broadhead The gift of J. [or T?] Barnewall', and in pencil 'GJ' (i.e. George Jones, Librarian of the Royal Academy 1834-40 and Keeper 1840-50). It is not clear whether this Broadhead was Theodore Henry Broadhead (1741-1810) (who changed his name to Broadhead from Brinckman), his son Theodore Henry Broadhead, M.P. (1767-1820) or another. Barnewall may be John Thomas Barnewall, baron Trimlestown (1773-1839).

Copy Note

The verso of the front loose endpaper is inscribed in pencil, 'Author Bévy (Charles-Joseph)'.

Binding Note

19th-century brown calf, upper and lower covers gilt-stamped with ruled borders having fleur-de-lys motifs at the corners; gilt-decorated spine lettered 'Histoire Des Inaugurations', 'RA' and '1776'.
