This publication is the first (and seemingly only) fascicule of the second series of Histoire des artistes vivants français et étrangers. The first series, published in 1856 included 10 fascicules on: Ingres, Eugène Delacroix, Corot, Chenavard, Decamps, Barye, Diaz, Courbet, Préault and Rude:- Histoire des artistes vivants français et étrangers: études d'après nature. Première série. Illustrée de 10 portraits pris au daguerréotype et gravés sur acier / par Théophile Silvestre ; introduction et catalogues par M. L. de Virmond. Paris: E. Blanchard, 1856.

A later edition was published incorporating the first series and the Vernet fascicule, with a revised title page listing all eleven artists.
