Responsibility Note

The first added engraved title-plate is signed as designed and engraved by A. Schroedter; the second, as engraved by Loedel; the third, as designed and engraved by Adolph Menzel and lithographically printed by M. Weigel.

Most plates are captioned with the name of the source-artist. Most carry the signature of the engraver - viz. Neuer, John Thompson, Leon de Laborde, Loedel, Andrew Best et Leloir, Lacoste et Gillaumin, Lor. Hoffmann, Hofmeister, Breviere, Strach, Hasse, Ed. Eichens, J. Thaeter. A few carry the imprint of the lithographic printer - viz. Königl. Lithograph. Institut, Berlin, or Theodor Glasbrenner.

The printer is named on the half-title versos: 'Imprimé Chez Paul Renouard, Rue Garancière, 5.'

The three volumes are dedicated by A. Raczynski severally to Guillaume Schadow, Guillaume Kaulbach and Frédéric Schinkel.

Summary Note

The publication-dates are given on the title pages as 1836, 1839 and 1841. The added engraved title-page of Vol. II. reads 'Die neuere deutsche Kunst Zweiter Band 1838'; that of Vol. III. has an engraved border only, with the title inscribed in ink, centre, 'L'Art moderne en Allemagne Tome troisième 1841 par A. Raczynski'. The work was also published in German in three volumes at Berlin, 1836-41, under the title 'Geschichte der neueren deutschen Kunst'.

The text is copiously illustrated with in-text engravings. The plates show paintings, sculptures and buildings by Schadow, Steinbruck, Schroedter, G. von Reutern, Schnorr, L. Klenze, Gärtner, D. Ohlmüller, G. Ziebland, Schinkel, Drake, Rauch, Tieck, Rietschel, Thorvaldsen, Steinle and Bruloff.
