Responsibility Note

In both volumes most plates are signed as painted, drawn or designed by William Hogarth. Those in Volume I are signed as engraved by Samuel Ireland, A.M. Ireland or Jane Ireland; those in Volume II, as engraved by Phillips, T. Ryder, Le Coeur, Whesell, Rosenburg, Merigot, Jane I., C. Apostool, Skelton, Brome, Sam. Ireland, Sykes, Barlow. The frontispiece portrait of Volume II names the source-artist, Roubiliac.

Most plates in Volume II carry the publisher's imprint of S. Ireland.

The in-text illustrations of Volume I (on pp. 29, 149) are unsigned.

The imprint of the second volume adds the name of the publisher 'B. White, Fleet Street'.

The versos of the front loose endpapers are stamped 'Clarke & Bedford'.

Summary Note

The variant title on the title-page of the second volume reads 'Pictures And Drawings' in place of 'Pictures, Drawings, And Scarce Prints', and 'Thames, Medway, Avon, Wye, &c. Vol. II.' in place of 'Thames And Medway'. The publication-date of Volume II is given on the title page as 1799, and most plates also carry the date of May 1 1799; but some carry the date of June 1 1797.

A few plates are aquatints (Vol. I, pp. 25, 31, 35, 41, 123, 127, 173; Vol. II. pp. 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 33, 45, 77, 135).
