Physical Description

28 p., 33 f., [6] p., 20, 20, 20, 20, 20 [pl. 4 in this group is dble.], 20, 20 pl.; 693 mm.

General Note

The plates are numbered as seven Hefte, each Heft containing 20 numbered plates. The plates measure 693 mm. and are preceded by an undated title-page of the same measurement. Between this title-page and the plates are bound in the pages of the text, which measure 27 mm and have their own title-page dated 1874. The small pages of text have been pasted in on sheets of the same size as the plates - the first 28 numbered pages on the rectos and versos of the sheets, the next 33 unnumbered pages on the rectos only (it is unclear from this whether they were originally pages or leaves), and the last 6 unnumbered pages again on the rectos and versos of the sheets. It is unclear whether this combination of the plates and the text is unique to this copy.

Contents

[T.p., t.p.] - Vorrede - Kurze Erklärung der einzelnen Tafeln; Druckfehler und Berichtigungen - Uebersicht des Inhalts der Tafeln - Verzeichniss der Tafeln - [Plates].

Most plates are signed by a draughtsman - E. Krüger, E. Jacobsthal, 'v. d. Cammer', Hartung, Bussler, P. Rawald (or Rowald), C. Elis, O. Hossfeld (or Kossfeld), C. Geik (or Geick), H.O. Schultze, R. Plüddemann, A. Döbber (or Doebber), C. Hinkeldeyn, P. Stubbe, Guth, A. Hartung, F. Peltz, C.A. Brinckmann, C. Kimmich (or Kimmig), O. Poetsch, G. Schlichting, P. Lyssel, A. Stubbe, A. Genick, Lüdtke, C. Zaar, Heise or F. Wolff. A few are also signed as lithographed by E. Krüger.

Each plate carries the publisher's imprint of Verlag der Springerschen Buchhandlung (M. Winckelmann) in Berlin (in the case of Heft 7:16, 20 this is in the form, 'Winckelmann & Söhne in Berlin'). In the Royal Academy's copy each plate carries the additional stamp of 'London: A.N. Myers & Co., 15 Berners Street W.'

Summary Note

We have entered the work under the title given on the small printed text. The title on the large title-page matching the plates has the same wording, except that it lacks the words 'Einleitender Text' and the date '1874'.

The plates are presented in numeric order, Heft I. Blatt 1-20 &c.; but they also carry numbers relating them to the typological order laid out in the 'Uebersicht' and 'Verzeichniss', i.e. I. Bänder, II. Freie Endigungen, III. Stützen, V. Flächenornamente, VI. Naturformen, VII. Geräthe, VIII Architektur. Although most of the designs are drawn from ancient Greek models, several show Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, Moorish and natural forms.
Grammatik der Ornamente is an extremely scarce work published by Johann Eduard Jacobsthal whilst Professor of Ornament at the Bauakademie in Berlin in 1874. The plates are divided into 8 subject areas: Bänder, Freie Endigungen, Stützen, Blattwellen, Flächen ornamente, Naturformen, Geräthe and Architektur, and are based on ancient Greek architecture and designs.

Binding Note

19th-century half red morocco, red paper-covered boards; spine lettered 'Jacobsthal - Grammatik Der Ornamente' and 'R.A.'
