$a The publication-date of 1792 is carried on the title plates of Volumes I, II; that of 1796 on the title-plate of Volume III. The work is a significant document in the history of`taste. J.-B.P. Lebrun had studied painting under Boucher and Fragonard, before devoting himself to connoisseurship and dealing. Between 1771 and 1813 he is reckoned to have held 165 sales, for which he produced some highly informative catalogues. In this present catalogue (and elsewhere) he encouraged interest in northern European artists, claiming, not unjustifiably, to have 'rediscovered' several painters, such as Hans Holbein, whose 'Ambassadors' is shown here (v.I, p.7), and which he exported to Britain in 1792. The engravings after Pieter Saenredam (v.I. p.70) and Vermeer (v. II. p.49) are among the first ever made after these painters. Many plates are captioned as 'Tiré du Cabinet de Mr. le Brun'. They show paintings by a great number of artists, engraved by over fifty engravers. At the head of his 'Table Alphabetique Des Noms Des Graveurs' the compiler draws attention to this 'variety of talents applied to the different genres of the masters', which also spare us monotony of treatment. He states, too, that he has included some engravings 'uncorrected' by their engravers, so that we may appreciate the distinct genre and manière of each master. |
