Summary Note

No publication-date appears on title-page or plates. The work is catalogued by the British Library and National Art Library as having been published serially between 1839 and 1847. The 'Notices' mentioned on the title page were published separately: L. Viardot, Notices sur les principaux peintres de l'Espagne; ouvrage servant de texte aux gravures de la Galerie Aguado (Paris, 1839).

The plates and frontispiece show paintings by Dominiquin (4 plates), Murillo (13 pl.), Velasquez, Ribera (3 pl.), Zurbaran, Morales, Francisquito, Carlo Dolci (2 pl.), P.P. Rubens (2 pl.), Rembrandt, Raphael, Corrège, Sasso Ferrato, Battoni, Luca Giordano and Canaletti.

These plates show only a selection of Aguado's large collection, which was open to the public at his Paris house. The collection was afterwards dispersed. Velasquez's painting of a Lady with a Fan shown here (pl. [2]) may now be seen at the Wallace Collection, London.
